Tips to Help Actors Create a Character Instantly at an Casting Audition

A Guide to Creating a Stable and Interesting Character Instantly

While you are at an audition, there are absolutely some obstacles that one will find themselves in. Possibly, not even while you are at an audition, but while you are acting in any form. However, more commonly you will experience this particular type of anxiety in the audition room when you are asked to perform a cold reading from the script. It is in these few precious moments that one must zone all of his or her attention to the script and begin to think several critical questions in order to establish a character instantly.

For the beginning actor, even the more advanced actor, establishing a deep and intriguing character instantly is one of great trouble. However, it does not have to be this way. It only takes a few moments, and a basic understanding of human emotions. And after grasping this notion, you can establish a character instantly that has depth and meaning.

As working as a Casting Director for several years, it is very common for me to sit in my casting chair, and watch countless actors and actresses walk in and out of my room with literally the same performance. It used to baffle me when watching, and thinking to myself, "I have seen this person before." And in all actuality I have never met them in my entire life. This feeling was brought on by their performance. It is because each of these actors gave a very flat and, dare I say, boring performance.

If one was to gaze at acting in the sense of a terrain - strange I know. However, visualize a gorgeous mountain range, one full of deep valleys, and extreme highs. There are literally millions of nooks and crannies that one could easily get lost in, and trying to explore the entire terrain would be close to impossible - and yet, one still wants to do so. And now visualize a plane - one from the Midwest, to where you can see for miles and miles. There are no hills, there are no mountains; the only thing that is prevalent within eyesight is flatness. Upon first gaze, one is immediately bored. There is absolutely nothing that catches the eye. Nothing is interesting, and soon one begins to turn its back and walk away.

i just received this Casting Call from Baskow & Associates Casting in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am not sure where they are shooting, but it is on board an actual ship. If you are or were an experienced Merchant Marine, this is a fantastic opportunity for Principal roles. But you must have shipboard experience and be prepared to travel if chosen.

Seeking actual MERCHANT MARINES for roles (ages 25-70, all ethnicities) in Sony film "MAERSK, ALABAMA" starring Tom Hanks (Director Paul Greengrass). WE ARE LOOKING FOR ACTUAL MERCHANT MARINES/SEAMEN -- not actors. If they are both - great! But please don't submit guys that are actors only; with no real maritime experience! Since we are actually shooting on a ship, we want real Merchant Marines/Seamen (guys that know how a ship operates & can provide Tom Hanks with real information). Submit photos, a description of their experience at sea, and place of residence.

For submissions, we're happy to send sides so you can tape your client, or they can self-tape.

Roles are as follows:

MARV
70; pleasant but useless – a fairly incompetent old time sailor; a bit of a drunk
6 lines

DURELL
25; African-American; fit, college educated, a good guy; new to the ship
3 lines

DEL
Over 60; an old salt, overweight, a smoker, an old-hand on the ship
2 lines

KEN QUINN
40ish; 2nd mate; at fist he is unconcerned about the pirate menace
5 lines

DAVE
over 60; like his buddy Del he is an old salt
1 line

STEWARD
Age open, can be younger 20's - 30's

2 lines

CREWMAN

1 line

GOOD LUCK !

LAST RESORT  is an hour long drama/pilot brought to us by Exec Producers/WritersSHAWN RYAN and KARL GAJDUSEK.
The hour long pilot will be filmed on Oahu and directed by  MARTIN CAMPBELL.  Filming begins first week of March, 2012.
STORY LINE:  The crew of the U.S.S. Nevada, a nuclear submarine, is fired upon by its own American allies after refusing to execute an order that’s issued under strange and suspicious circumstances.  Desperate, and running out of options, MARCUS CHAPLAIN and his crew land on the island of Sainte Marina, where they take over the NATO Listening Station.  Able to monitor the movements of the world’s militaries, they declare themselves (and the 24 nukes they still possess) independent…

Rachel Sutton and Katie Doyle  will handle local principal casting as well as background.

SUBMISSIONS:  Principal casting is being handled through agencies.  If you are unrepresented, please send hard copy of resume and headshot to:
LAST RESORT CASTING c/o Diamond Head Studios, 510 18th Avenue  Honolulu, Hawaii 96816.  PLEASE,  NO EMAIL SUBMISSIONS AT THIS TIME.
NOTE:  current contact phone number(s) and email address must be included for consideration.  Thank you for your patience, with regards to being contacted, as we have a month before principal photography begins.

Please keep in mind that there are a limited number of speaking roles for the pilot.  However, we are fortunate in that we will be casting several co-star, supporting and featured background roles.  Numerous opportunities for background work will also be available.  Most series regulars and recurring cast will be handled in LA and likely go to well known, big name, establish actors.

I'm still confused about this casting call. Is it on O'ahu or NOT? WHICH HOTEL? I read the original casting notice and it was very confusing. I'd like to try and make it. Thanks in advance for any clarification!
