Comment by Karen Agudong 1 hour ago I meant to also mention that John said he is limiting the class size to only 16-18 students for the Teen workshop and only 16-18 students for the Youth workshop so that it will be very interactive and personal. Aloha, Karen

John brings his dynamic On Camera Acting Seminar to Kauai for the first time. Well-known in Los Angeles, his classes, seminars and camps are where serious, young actors come to train. Hi Ms. Carol! Yay! I am so very thrilled and excited that Ms. Susie is coming back! She taught me a lot at her last workshop and gave me a lot of inspiration and advice that will help me toward reaching my goals! Can't wait until the workshop :-)
Comment by Carol Culver on March 19, 2012 at 4:57pm I am very excited to announce that Susie Mains, talent scout & manager extraordinaire from LA will be teaching a very special workshop on Oahu Sat. May 5 and on Kauai Sunday, May 6. She is considered an expert in her field and one of the top representatives of children and young people in the biz. With over 25 years as a talent representative in both NY & LA, she has discovered and worked with some of the world's most luminous stars including Tobey Maguire, Fergie, Seth Green, Brian Austin Green, Katherine McPhee, Tia, Tamera & Tahj Mawry, Lorraine Nicholson, & the list goes on... She is co-owner of the LA based management company Trilogy Talent, managing many current film and TV stars.
Workshop details will be posted soon on HAN. Watch for it. Susie has come to Kauai twice in the past 5 years and both times the workshop was full. This will be her first time teaching it on Oahu. To familiarize yourself with Susie go to her website: http://www.susiemains.com Be sure to watch her in action on the link to the Dr. Phil show "Make My Kid a Star".

Comment by Aerrin Liddell on November 19, 2011 at 9:19pm @Carter For acting, I would highly recommend getting your child into acting classes with either Scott Rogers Studios or Sherrie Robertson (Film Actors Studio). Sherrie's classes are smaller and less expensive, Scott's are more studio-like and they usually have programs during school breaks. Both are great (my son has only studied with Sherrie, but I have done adult classes with both and think both places have a lot to offer).
My 9-year-old son got his agent after a showcase they put on as part of a class. We were invited in for him to do some cold reading and he got signed. So far he has booked some catalog work and had a guest appearance on H50. My 4-year-old son isn't signed with anyone but has been sent out to catalog castings a couple of times through my agent just because they know I had a kid, so having a parent or sibling in the biz is certainly a viable way to get an agent's attention too.
If you are ready to approach the agencies right now, then I would recommend that you e-mail the agencies a few pictures (they don't have to be professional) of your child along with basic information (height, age, etc.) and a quick list of their experience (school stuff counts). Also make sure to mention any and all special skills that the child has (sports they play well, surfing, musical instruments, etc.). As a pre-teen, I got my first commercial agent because I happened to play the flute and they needed a girl my age that could do that for a commercial, so from my personal experience on the mainland, I would think that letting them know your child's special skills are important.
If your child is invited in to meet with an agent the most important thing is for the child to be able to talk to the agent without being timid and for acting to clearly be something that the child wants to do and not something the parent is pushing them into (very young children are the exception so long as they are not super shy).
If your child has no experience but wants to get some without investing in classes right now, I would recommend creating a profile on HAN for the child and keep it up-to-date. The ACM students seem to use this site quite a bit when they are casting their projects and they frequently use children. Getting on set is a great learning experience for children as well as the parents.
Make sure you are only talking to reputable agencies on the island and not one of those be-on-the-Disney-channel scam schools. The agencies here on the island do seem to have relationships with certain photographers on the island, but you should always be free to use any photographer you want for pictures and not be pushed into using certain ones. And you should never be told that you have to take certain classes. An agent will certainly want current pictures and may suggest training, but a reputable agent won't tell you that you have to go somewhere specific as a condition of working with you.
Kathy Muller and ADR are the only SAG franchised agencies on the island, but Premiere sends their people out a lot to the same auditions. And as far as adult auditions go, I have noticed that Outlaw and Niche have been sending people out more too, as does Ruth Woodhall (I always notice where people are coming from on the sign in sheets). Not sure if they handle children or not, but it is worth looking into if the big agencies don't have a place for your child right now.
Another thing worth mentioning if your child is school-age is that having the support of your child's school is important if you want to be able to get permission for your child to miss school for work. So good grades and otherwise good attendance are musts.
