Comment by Corbett Trey Roy on February 19, 2011 at 10:25pm Hi Long time member first time commenting. I was fortunate to have gotten three PA jobs during the summer and fall of last year, right after I graduated with a Bachelor's in Film Production, but I got to say that my four years could not be applied to anything I did at my PA jobs. Luckily I did get to produce & direct a large scale luau production for most of my college career, but none of it prepared me for what to expect as a PA. I'm sure if I was to have attended that PA workshop I would've been better prepared to know what to expect, but I didn't do that. I just bought the Production Assistant's Pocket Handbook. I felt better about what I was getting into after reading it, but I still had this overpowering anxiety that if I had one small slip up I would be gone, especially since I was working for a very large budget film. That anxiety went away with more experience. So...
To the aspiring PA, I say help out with UH ACM student films. It may not be paying, but it's experience that'll look better to the next big budget production coordinator. It's a win/win situation!
To the PAs looking for more work, I say help the ACM students as well and network. I'm assuming that the ppl that want to PA, also want to make movies, so do exactly that. Even if it's just for fun. Stay in the know of the business and network, network, network!!! Especially fellow PAs. They may do well for themselves in the industry and guess who they are gonna call when they need help? YOU!
One last thing. Some things you may have to do as a PA could possibly be tasks that you have never done in your entire life, so seriously expect the unexpected and learn as you go. And quickly! I think you just have to be very knowledgeable and have lots of street smarts.
I hope this was helpful. I just felt like putting in my two cents.
Are the skyproductions paying positions or volunteer?
TT
