Filmmakers are GO!!! Monday October 10th at 5pm, Filmmakers were set loose with this year's Championship Challenge. They now have less than two weeks to complete their submissions for the 2011 Championship event. Filmmakers were given 40 days to write, shoot and edit a 7 minute or less short film exploring the topic, “A Hawaiian Tale”, using the only prop “The Pacific Ocean”.
Showdown In Chinatown appeals not only to aspiring actors and filmmakers, but to ordinary people who have never thought of visual storytelling as a possible means of expression. Young and old alike… professional and amateur… all are given the opportunity to do something creative and have their work premiered on the big screen. We would like to reach-out to the mass public and ask that you help us spread the word about our mission. Showdown In Chinatown has successfully been an educational forum for the past 6 Years, and has helped our creative community grow and flourish. Films that were submitted to Showdown in Chinatown have been traveling and making a splash within local and international film festivals. Some of our graduates have even been inspired to take on Hollywood and create their own feature films. We hope that by continuing to provide Hawaii with this creative outlet we will strengthen our resources and unite our talent for a stronger industry in the years to come. The main event and screening will take place on Saturday November 19th at Nextdoor, 43 North Hotel St. The doors open at 8pm and films begin screening at 8:30pm. There is a $20 cover charge... the cost goes to sustaining a creative outlet for the local independent & underground film community of Hawaii.
Following the short films, Showdown hosts Honolulu's only monthly entertainment industry mixer with musical performances by The Human Beat Box Jason Tom and DJ Mr. Nick from the popular show JETSET on KTUH radio. Supporting original music, we welcome back one of Hawaii’s up & coming musicians, Matthew McVickar of Clones Of The Queen, creating and performing live original beats from his solo project, LAPWING.
Encouraging all local Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, Editors, Crew Members, and film/tv fans to come out and network with the members of the film Hawaii film community. Keeping our Island's industry strong and ever fruitful!
So come down and check out the SHOWDOWN IN CHINATOWN on Saturday November 19th, or better yet... get a team together and show Honolulu a story. Next event is one December 17th and will be a screening of the 2011 BEST OF !!! |

Comment by William Terry on April 10, 2011 at 4:02pm Hey Filmmakers and Actors, had an idea I wanted to run past everyone to get some feedback. To my knowledge Han hasn’t got any program going to get independent films financed here in Hawaii. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in entertaining the idea of “Artist Produced Films.” Basically films financed by a group effort of a group of artist like we have here at HAN. The way I figured was we could keep it simple and break the budget of a film into $5 “shares.” So say a films budget is $15000 then you would need 3000 shares purchased. You could buy as many shares as you want and when the film is done any gross profit would be distributed equally based on the shares. So say if the film gets picked up for DVD distribution for $50000 gross profit each share would be worth about $16 bucks. Not a ton of money but you tripled your money and the more shares you bought the higher the profit to you. And of course the numbers go up the more profit the film makes like if it makes a million dollar profit (not impossible with a good film) each share would be worth $333 which is 66 times what you put in.
In my mind this idea works best if people only buy one or two shares to reduce individual loss. If you think about it HAN has over 5000 members, if each member bought one share every other month it would cost them 30 bucks a year and we could raise $150000 a year. A lot of indi films could be made with that money and only one of them has to make a decent profit to get your initial $30 back. And worse case scenario none of the films makes a dime and each member only lost $30 and we got some films made.
Anyways that’s my idea, I have a bunch of ideas on how to collect and organize the money as well as a forum for the film ideas to be placed on for share buyers to choose where they wish to put there funds, but I wanted to see if anyone liked the general idea before I spent more time developing it.
Please let me know what you think.
Mahalo for your time,
William Terry
